Kenred originates from a small, single vineyard that was located at Redbank in the Pyrenees Wine Region of Victoria.
Established in 2002 by the Keech family, the boutique vineyard of just 7 acres of vines, was a specialist producer of premium Shiraz, bottling only the grapes grown within the vineyard. Due to family health issues the vineyard and winery were sold in 2015.
At harvest, grapes were hand-picked, basket-pressed and the wine carefully crafted by renowned winemaker Michael Unwin, with minimum mechanization and intervention. The first aim was to produce a premium Shiraz, typical of this part of the Pyrenees Wine Region, big, bold fruitiness with balanced tannins. The intense fruit flavours of this wine are complemented by its barrel maturation for over two years before bottling, producing subtle overtones of French oak.
Every Kenred vintage to date has been slightly different, reflecting the currency of the climate and length of ripening period. Weather-wise, and given a choice, we always preferred to harvest late, rather than pick the crop before it reached its maximum potential. The 2008 and 2009 award winning vintages were a sell-out, and early indications suggest the 2010, with its bottle-ageing, will be even better. Kenred 2010 Shiraz is on limited release. Careful cellaring over the next 5 – 8 years will reap its rewards.
Kenred Shiraz is on offer at specialist retail wine outlets and the top restaurants around Victoria and the ACT.
